Advanced Distributed Learning (ADL) Initiative
The Department of Defense (DoD) and the Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP) launched the Advanced Distributed Learning (ADL) initiative in November 1997. The goal of the ADL initiative is to provide better access to training materials by modularizing learning content to make it reusable, more accessible, adaptable, affordable and be interoperable between Learning Management Systems. Its purpose was to reduce training costs by leveraging the governments investment in e-learning technology. It was also charged with promoting the use of the technology.
