MPEG is a working group of ISO/IEC established in 1988. It is in charge of the development of standards for coded representation of digital audio and video.

• MPEG-1 is the 1992 standard for compressed digital video for noninterlaced displays. Video CD and MP3 are based on this standard. This standard allowed for 74 minutes of digital video to be stored on a compact disc (CD).
   
• MPEG-2 is the DVD-Video standard.
   
• MPEG-4 - this standard is intended for video conferencing and similar applications using low bandwidths.
   
• MPEG-7 - the standard for description and search of audio and visual content.
   
• MPEG-21 - "Multimedia Framework" was started in June 2000.
